INTRODUCTION
The steering of a four wheel vehicle is arranged so that the front wheels will roll without any lateral slip.
A steering system consists of three elements:
a. steering gear at the lowering end
of the steering knuckles
b. steering linkage
c. steering wheel
Slip angle:
The angle through which the wheel has to turn to sustain the side force is called slip or creep angle.
When the slip angle of the
front wheel is greater than the
rear wheel , the condition is
known as understeer. In this case
wheel turns at a radius larger
than that intended.
TYPES OF AUTOMOBILE
The automobiles are classified on the following basis:
1. PURPOSE
Passenger vehicles – car, jeep, bus.
Goods vehicles – Truck
2. CAPACITY
Light motor vehicles – car, jeep, motor cycle, and scooter.
Heavy motor vehicles – Bus, coach, tractor.
3. FUEL USED
Petrol vehicles – car, jeep, motor cycle, scooter.
Diesel vehicles – Truck, bus, tractor, bulldozer.
Electric cab – Battery truck, fork lift
4. No. Of wheels
Two wheelers.
Three wheelers.
Four wheelers
Six wheelers.
TYPES OF STEERING SYSTEM:
Depending upon the number & position of the wheels being steered , steering system can be classified as follows
Front wheel steering
Rear wheel steering
Four wheel steering
