INTRODUCTION
WELCOME FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
I would like to welcome you to the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, which is
part of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Faculty of the University of Manchester. We
are the largest school of this discipline in the UK, and this allows us to be home to a full
range of activities within the spectrum of electrical and electronic engineering.
This programme handbook is designed to guide you through to the completion of your
MSc degree and therefore it should be kept carefully and referred to frequently during your
time in Manchester. An electronic copy of this Handbook is also available on the “MSc
Virtual Common Room” (please see Section 1.5: Student Portal and eLearning below for
further details of this).
TIMETABLES
Each course unit is taught in a 3 week block, and each semester is divided into 4 blocks.
Lectures and laboratories are taught in two or three hours, with time being allocated for
reading, private study and project work.
You will be given a printed copy of the timetable, complete with room details, during the
induction session in Welcome Week. An electronic copy of the timetable is also available on
the “MSc Virtual Common Room” (please see below for further details).
STUDENT PORTAL AND E-LEARNING
You will have already accessed the Student Portal to complete your registration before the
start of the academic year. The Student Portal should also be used to check exam
timetables online, update your personal details and addresses, and eventually used to obtain
copies of your MSc result and transcript. This can be accessed at:
EMAIL AND COMPUTER ACCESS
When you complete the registration process for The University of Manchester, you will be
given a University email address, as well as a computer login and password. Your login will
provide you with access to the University computing facilities available in the libraries, the
various computer clusters available around the campus and in many student Halls of
Residence.
You are asked to use your University of Manchester email account during your time here.
Communication with students is usually via email, so you should check your email account
regularly.
