INTRODUCTION
A person's hand/palm and finger are unique however not as unique as their fingerprints or iris, for this reason, businesses and schools like to use hand scanner technology, to authenticate but not identify its users.
Authenticates by a one to one comparison.
Compares your characteristics with your stored information.
Hand scanner works by creating and storing the templates of hand geometry in a biometric device which are later used for verification
It measures the top and side of the hand and not palm which includes hand geometry.

ACQUISITION SYSTEM
Users place their hand on a recessed ,covered metal surface.
Five pegs ensure that hand is placed properly.
Fingers are slightly separated and palm rests flat.
A series of camera acquire 3D images of the hand from all sides.
DISTINCTIVE FEATURES
Distinctive features include overall hand and finger width , height and length
Distance between joints and other elements
Hand scan devices overlook the tips of the fingers as they can vary in appearance as nails grow or are cut
Features acquired by hand scan devices are not very distinctive and hence cannot be used for identification
Template Creation
Features of the hand and fingers are extracted from the series of 3-D images and recorded into a 9 byte template.
Similar to any other biometric system the live template is compared against the threshold which results into a score.
The small template size allows many user templates to be stored in a very small amount of memory, but it is also reflective of the relative lack of distinctiveness of hand scan data.
Working of the system
To register in a hand-scan system a hand is placed on a reader's covered flat surface. This placement is positioned by five guides or pins that correctly situate the hand for the cameras. A succession of cameras captures 3-D pictures of the sides and back of the hand. The attainment of the hand-scan is a fast and simple process.
Hand scan recognition system measures and analyzes the overall structure, shape and proportions of the hand.
It measures length,width,thickness,fingers and joints along with the characteristics of the skin surface.
Typical system measures 90 different features like bone structure and finger width.
The hand-scan device can process the 3-D images in 5 seconds or less and the hand verification usually takes less than 1 second. The image capturing and verification software and hardware can easily be integrated within standalone units.
The scanner uses this information to determine the hand proportions.
It translates this information into a template.
Template is then compared against a stored template and verification is performed.
