SDM
Most straightforward upgrade alternative
Two main drawbacks:
1.It requires more fiber,Very Expensive even over short distances.
2.Seperate set of optical Amplifier or Repeaters must be installed for each fiber.(short distances-No need for Amplifier or Repeaters)
Chromatic dispersion:
It is not a problem,if the link uses dispersion-shifted fiber.
with the standard single mode fiber, the chromatic dispersion limit is about 60 km atGb/s
PMD:
It induced distance limit may be even lower because of additional PMD caused by splices & connectors along the transmission path
APPLICATION AREAS
InterExchange Networks
Under Sea Networks
Local-Exchange Networks
Enterprise Links
BIT INTERLEAVING(MUX):
Input(Frame pulse) is applied to the mode locked laser and it split the I/P
One copy is used for data stream to be multiplexed.
Another copy of data is delayed by jτ
Delayed data stream and Data is applied to the Modulator.
The O/P of the modulator and Framing pulse stream are combined to obtain the multiplexed O/P.
