INTRODUCTION
Vietnam
Officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
Located on the eastern coast of the Indochinese Peninsula.
Bordered on the north by China, on the west by Laos and
Cambodia, and on the south and east by the South China Sea.
Traditional agriculture country (80% of population actively
involved in agriculture production)
Diverse climatic conditions stretching from subtropics (North)
to tropics (South).
The diverse soil and climatic conditions facilitate Vietnam to
grow various agricultural crop species, especially fruit,
vegetable and flower ones that can be grown year round in the
whole country.
Rainfall in most areas varies from 1600 – 2500 mm per year.
Horticulture plays an important role in agricultural area.
Horticultural products can meet domestic demands and partly
for export to some temperate countries in Northern Asia,
Northern America, Europe, etc.
FRUITS
1. Tropical, sub-tropical and some temperate
fruit species are being grown in Vietnam.
2. The largest concentration of fruit production
is in the Southern region, followed by the Red
River Delta.
3. In recent years, area and production of fruits
have been increased
4. Per capita fruit consumption is 75 kg/year.
VEGETABLES
1.Vegetable production is characterized by large
number of rural household (85%) involved.
2.More than 70 vegetable species are grown out
of which 40 are considered as the main ones.
3.Vegetable consumption per capita per year is
high (102 kg).
FLOWERS
1.Flower productions concentrated in Red River
Delta, Ho Chi Minh and Da Lat – Lam Dong
province.
2.Flower species grown is quite abundant, but
rose, chrysanthemum, gladiolus and orchids
have the biggest area.
3.There are a lot of demand from domestic and
foreign markets.
4.It is becoming highly profitable business
involving various foreign companies (e.g.
Hasfarm - Holland, Appollo - Taiwan)
CONCLUSION
1. Vietnam is large agricultural land (80% of rural
households). There is enormous potential to
improve productivity, production and quality of
horticultural crops.
2. Cash earning of Horticultural crops is
increasing year by year. Therefore Horticulture
is backbone of the Vietnam’s future economy.
