HOUSING OPTIONS FOR COLLEGE STUDENTS IN DELHI
HOUSING OPTIONS.pdf (Size: 1.37 MB / Downloads: 23)
Background
Delhi being the capital of the country, house many migrants from all over the country.
Among these migrants there are a large number of college students, who come in the city to
peruse their higher education. As there are more than 500 colleges in Delhi, nearly 8 lakh
students are enrolled every year. The college, due to its limited resources, can provide
hostel accommodation to only 50% of the students. The students who are non-residents of
Delhi and do not get hostels, have to find other housing options in the locality. The options
available are – Paying guest, rented rooms, rented flats and Private hostels. These options
have their own limitations and issues. Sometime the students have to compromise with
their studies or comfort, other time residents of the area have to compromise with privacy
and facilities. Private market understand the importance of student housing and is
mushrooming around the colleges.
Need for the Study
The students who stay off campus have to face many kind of problems. The problems
are affordability, security, inhabitable living conditions, overcrowding and lack of facilities.
These problems effect their studies directly, the difference between students living in
college hostel and students living in private accommodations is clearly reflected in their
grades. Private individuals in the residential area around the colleges have realized this
opportunity and has rented more than 60% of the total residential built up. This
phenomenon also lead to few problems for both residents and students.
Scope and Limitations
The study aims at the phenomenon of housing for off-campus students in the
Delhi city
The study focuses only on undergraduate and post graduate college students
Due to limited time duration and limited man power and resources the study
will be limited to few colleges which will be selected on the basis of location and
scale
Understanding of the Phenomenon of Student Housing at City Level
Delhi master plan permits hostel and other accommodation facilities in residential land
use. This has given private individuals to sublet their house on rent for students. At present
almost all the residential localities in Delhi has housing for students. The magnitude of this
activity vary due to various factors. Unauthorized colonies house maximum volume of
college students in Delhi. It is because these accommodation are affordable. The first
priority of any student, when searching for accommodation is affordability. Laxmi Nagar in
East Delhi is the best example of such activity.
Next priority of students after affordability is accessibility, so the location near colleges
(deficient in hostel accommodation) has high concentration of student housing. These
localities offer a wide range of options, from the costliest which include all facilities like AC,
gym cafeteria to the cheapest one. There are different type of accommodation available,
Paying Guest (P.G), rooms on rent, flat on rent and hostels. A large percentage of students
stay in Urban Villages because of the only reason that is affordability.
Location Prefered by College Students in Delhi
Preference of location is based upon the priority and choices available. The students
who can afford lives in planned are and those who cannot lives in urban villages and
unauthorized colonies.
These locations are scattered all over the city. In North Delhi, Central Delhi and West
Delhi there are 12 colonies, most of which are planned areas. In East Delhi and in Dwarka,
majority of the students stay in unauthorized colonies. In South Delhi majority of the
students stays in Urban Villages.
The type of accommodation options available are Hostels, Flats on rent, Rooms on rent
and Paying Guests. In Planned area all the options are available, whereas in unplanned areas
only rented flats and rented rooms are available.
There is no noticeable social segregation on the basis of cast and religion in students.
But there is social segregation in terms of affordability. Where under the same roof they
gain the same level of education, they are socially segregated outside the college. This do
not lead to a healthy competitive environment of study.
Case Studies
The case studies are selected on the basis of location and type of housing subsystem.
Total 8 localities, 5 in North Delhi and 3 in South Delhi has been taken under the study.
These colonies cover all planned are, unauthorized colonies and urban villages. The case
study of the two regions (north and south) shows the difference in housing type in these
two region. Within the region case study of all type of subsystem is done and analysed.
