Management of foliar blight of Rajmash (Phaseolus vulgaris l.) under temperate zone of Jammu division
ABSTRACT
Pulses in India have a special role in meeting the protein requirement of predominantly vegetarian population. They form an integral part of diet as source of protein. These crops have additional advantage for sustainable agriculture, because of their limited input requirements, suitability for growing under moisture deficit conditions, soil-enriching capability and varied use as feed and fodder. French bean being hardy crop act as crop insurance for farmers against natural calamities. Early maturing cultivars fit well in various cropping system without any adverse effect on the main cereal crops. Its cultivation in India is mainly confined to northern hilly tracts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh as a kharif crop and also as winter crop in some parts of Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Western and Eastern ghats and North eastern plain zone, where winters are mild and frost free. Under temperate conditions Rajmash is being attacked by many foliar pathogens. Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum (Sacc. & Magnus) Lams.-Scrib on this crop is the major constraint in economic yields. Keeping in view the importance of this disease an experiment was devised for managing this disease in our farm trials and for final recommendations to farming community. Five different fungicides usually used against anthracnose in fields were taken up and after four years of experiments the best fungicide i.e. propiconazole checked disease far better over conventionally used mancozeb and carbendazim.
