FABRICATION SHOP
The main work of this fabrication shop is maintenance of the jobs brought from the rigs. The main workings done in the fabrication shop are gas cutting, gas welding and arc welding. There are about 8 to 10 operators in the shop working in a single shift.
MACHINE SHOP
The main work of this shop is to repair the smaller parts brought from the rigs. Some basic parts that they have to repairs are pistons nuts, screws, bolts, shafts and they have to replace the worn, out bearing etc. There are many modern equipments at machine shop which can be used accordingly as per the job requirement. There are number of lathe, Drilling machine, Milling machine, and sharper too.
DIESEL AND EQUIPMENT REPAIR SHOP
This shop is the most important of all the other shops in the mechanical department. The work of this shop is to repair the engines and equipments brought from the rigs, the rigs may be drilling rigs, work over rigs, of production rigs.
The mail repaired jobs are the Caterpillar and Cummins engines which are mostly user at ONGC rigs. The equipment like compressor, draw works, mud pumps, mud swivels, traveling blocks, Torque converter, centrifugal pumps, cooling heads and other equipment are also brought at the shop for repairing. Generally heavy repairing is not done here but forwarded to central workshop, situated at Baroda.
AN OVER-VIEW OF DIESEL ENGINE
The Diesel engine was invented by Rudolf Diesel in 1892. Diesel intended the engine to use a variety of fuels including coal dust. He demonstrated the engine in the 1900 position Universal Worlds fair using peanut oil. It was later refined and perfected by Charles F. Kettering.
The Diesel engine is a type of internal combustion engine. More specifically, a compression ignition engine-in which the fuel is ignited by the high temperature of a compressed gas.
WORKING OF DIESEL ENGINE
The working of Diesel engine can be mainly divided in four stages- Suction, Compression, Expansion, and lastly the Exhaust stroke.
In the Suction stroke the air is taken into the cylinder, by opening the inlet value. Thus the piston is at the bottom of the cylinder which is known as BDC (Bottom Dead Center). Now both valve remains closed and the piston starts moving towards the upper most position of cylinder which is known as TDC (Top Dead Center). During this time the air is compressed and higher pressure and at the end of this stroke the plunger spray the diesel and due to this the compressed and hot air, fuel gets ignited and thus explosion is created in the cylinder, thus due to this the piston move towards BDC and thus power is generated.
