Introduction of the study
The Pharmaceutical Corporation (Indian Medicines) Kerala Ltd or Oushadhi is a herbal Ayurvedic medicines production company under the direct control of Kerala Government. It is directly controlled by Health and Family Welfare Department of Kerala State Government and is governed by a Board of Directors, appointed by the Government of Kerala. Oushadi is originated as Sree Kerala Varma Govt. Ayurvedic Pharmacy in 1941 at the instance of His Highness the Maharaja of Cochin, for the supply of medicines to Govt. Ayurvedic Hospitals in Thrissur and erstwhile princely family of Cochin State. In 1959 it is converted and registered as Co-operative Society, and named as Sree Kerala Varma Ayurvedic Co-operative Pharmacy &Stores Limited, Thrissur. In1975 it is incorporated as a company under the Companies Act 1956 and renamed as The Pharmaceutical Corporation (I.M) Kerala Ltd Thrissur and its operations started on 1976 with the takeover of the business of SKVAC Pharmacy. Oushadhi pharmaceuticals produce different categories of ayurvedic medicines of both classical and proprietary.
The study was conducted for a period of two weeks. The aim of the study is to acquire practical knowledge of the application of management theories in the functioning of the organization and it also helps in understanding the organization structure and functions of various departments in the organization.
Need and significance of the study
This organizational study aims at generating a practical awareness of the functions and management of the company Oushadhi. The study covers a general understanding of the company Oushadhi, its culture, departments, and its business activities. It gives an opportunity to know the nature of the ayurvedic industry in which the company Oushadhi belongs to and the market characteristics of the business. Oushadhi is one among the few Public Sector companies, consistently making profit and paying dividend to Government of Kerala since 1999. They are the largest producer of Ayurveda medicines in public sector in India. Oushadi is an ISO 9001-2008 certified company produces 450 Ayurvedic formulations - both classical and proprietary. It caters to the need of public through a vast network of 610 agencies spread all over the nation. Oushadi supplies medicine to Government of Kerala for the distribution to common man through ISM Dept.
Objectives of the study
1. To acquire knowledge about the functioning of the organization.
2. To understand the objectives of each department, its functions and find out how much it is linked to the corporate objective.
3. To study all processes procedures and programs of the department.
4. To develop an understanding on the co-ordination and control mechanisms in the organization.
5. To recognize the strength of the organization and to conduct a SWOT analysis.
Scope of the study
This organizational study aims at generating a practical awareness of the functions and management of the company Oushadhi. Oushadhi is one among the few Public Sector companies, consistently making profit and paying dividend to Government of Kerala since 1999. They are the largest producer of Ayurveda medicines in public sector in India. .
The study helps to familiarize with the business organization and to understand the operation of the organization and how they are carried out. It gives an opportunity to know the nature of the ayurvedic industry in which the company oushadhi belongs to and the market characteristics of the business. The study helps in understanding the organization structure of Oushadhi and functions of various departments in the organization and how they are working in coordination in order to achieve its overall organizational objectives. It also provides an opportunity to conduct a further research on the functioning of the organisation and to know more about their competitive strength in the ayurvedic industry in which the Oushadhi belongs to.
The organization study conducted at oushadhi highlights the competitive advantages of the company. It helps in understanding the strengths and weaknesses through the close analysis of functioning of company with respect to the industry it belongs to.
The study gives an opportunity to know the nature of the industry in which the organization belongs to and the market characteristics of the business. It also highlights the relative strengths and weaknesses of the company with respect to its major competitors in that particular industry.
Coverage of the study
The organisation study was conducted for a period of two weeks. It helps in understanding the organization structure and functions of various departments in the organization. Mainly there are 5 departments in oushadhi. The departmental studies were not well conducted in detail due to the lack of time. Also another limitation of the study was employers were restricted from disclosing their main strength, weakness, matters related to marketing, and finance that affects in drawing conclusions from the study.

The study covers a general understanding of the company Oushadhi, its culture, departments, and its business activities. The major department in Oushadhi includes marketing, administration, finance, production, and research department. The data collected from each department in Oushadhi through different sources.
Sources of Data
Primary data
In this study primary data is collected from different departments, by direct interview and observation. Direct interview was made with different department heads as well as some of the employees. The data collected from the production department is through direct observation.
Secondary data
In this study, secondary data are collected from published reports of the company, magazines, manuals of each department and websites. Here various financial datas are collected from different accounts that have maintained by the Oushadhi.
