WHAT IS POWER QUALITY
Electrical power quality may be define as a measure of how well electric power can be utilise by the customer .
Power quality is simply the interaction of electrical power with electrical equipment
The utility may define power quality as reliability and shows statics demonstrating that its system is 99.98 percent reliable
INTRODUCTION
Power quality is essential for smooth
functioning of industrial process.
For better economic reasons.
Increase power reliability.
Use of solid state devices improves efficiency
HARMONICS BASIC CONCEPT
We define harmonics as voltages or currents at frequencies that are a multiple of the fundamental frequency
i.e. if the fundamental frequency is f, the harmonics have frequencies 2f, 3f, 4f, . .
What are the effects of harmonics? The biggest problem with harmonics is voltage waveform distortion.
THE AFFECTS
The actual problems of any building/industry will vary depending on the type and number of installed harmonics producing load
The following problems caused by harmonics:
One of the major effects of power system harmonics is to increase the current in the system
And the heating effect of harmonic currents can cause destruction of equipment like conductor and also cause fire
Capacitor failure-harmonics resonance
Circuit breaker tripping-inductive heating and over loading
Computer malfunctioning-voltage distortion
Transformer failure-inducting
Motor failure-inductive heating
