AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY
The automobile industry is a term that covers a wide range of companies and organizations involved in the design, development, manufacture, marketing, and selling of motor vehicles, towed vehicles, motorcycles and mopeds. It is one of the world's most important economic sectors by revenue.
Indian Automobile industry is the ninth largest in the world and Asia’s fourth largest exporter. Many global players have established their manufacturing plants in India including Ford, GM, Volvo, Mercedes Benz, Fiat, Toyota, BMW, Honda and Volkswagen etc. There are also a number of Indian automobile manufacturing companies including Tata, Maruti, Mahindra and Mahindra etc. The Indian Automobile Industry is manufacturing over 11 million vehicles and exporting about 1.5 million every year. The dominant products of the industry are two wheelers with a market share of over 75% and passenger cars with a market share of about 16%. Commercial vehicles and three wheelers share about 9% of the market between them. About 91% of the vehicles sold are used by households and only about 9% for commercial purposes. The industry has attained a turnover of more than USD 35 billion and provides direct and indirect employment to over 13 million people.

The Indian Automotive Industry after de-licensing in July 1991 has grown at a spectacular rate on an average of 17% for last few years. The industry has attained a turnover of USD 35.8 billion, (INR 165,000 crore) and an investment of USD 10.9 billion. The industry has provided direct and indirect employment to 13.1 million people. Automobile industry is currently contributing about 5% of the total GDP of India. India’s current GDP is about USD 650 billion and is expected to grow to USD 1,390 billion by 2016. The projected size in 2016 of the Indian automotive industry varies between USD 122 billion and UDS 159 billion including USD 35 billion in exports. This translates into a contribution of 10% to 11% towards India’s GDP by 2016, which is more than double the current contribution. HYUNDAI
Hyundai Motor India (HMIL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Company (HMC), is a passenger car exporter and manufacturer in India. It currently markets eight passenger car models including the Eon, Santro, i10, the i20, Accent, Verna, Sonata and Santa Fe. The company primarily operates in India, where it is headquartered in Chennai. HMIL's first car, the Hyundai Santro was launched in 23 September 1998 and was a runaway success. Within a few months of its inception HMIL became the second largest automobile manufacturer and the largest automobile exporter in India.
HMIL’s manufacturing plant near Chennai claims to have the most advanced production, quality and testing capabilities in the country. To cater to rising demand, HMIL commissioned its second plant in February 2008, which produces an additional 300,000 units per annum, raising HMIL’s total production capacity to 600,000 units per annum
Brief History
Hyundai Motor India (HMIL) was incorporated in 1996 in Chennai, India.
The company commenced exports to Latin America in 2003. In the same year, the company launched Santro Xing, a small car; and premium SUV, Terracan.
HMIL opened a second plant in Chennai, India in 2008.
In January 2012, Bo Shin Seo was appointed as the Managing Director at HMIL.
Rakesh Srivastava was appointed as the Vice President of National Sales at HMIL in April 2012.
The company launched an online service website http://customercare.hyundai.co.in to offer online services to its customers in July 2012.
