The batteries form a significant part of many electronic devices. Typically electrochemical batteries or cells convert chemical energy into electrical energy. Presently, battery takes up a huge amount of space and contributes to a large part of the devices weight. There is strong recent interest in ultrathin, flexible, safe energy storage devices to meet the various design and power needs of modern gadgets. New researches suggest an electric battery engineered to use a spacer formed largely of cellulose and carbon nano tubes called paper battery. Paper batteries are non-toxic, non-corrosive and light-weight than the normal batteries.
Paper batteries show favorable for applications where size and portability is the major necessity. They can be rolled, twisted, folded and even cut into your desired shape and size without any drop in efficiency. Paper batteries can be now implemented in wearable technology like wearable biosensors and wearable computers etc. Paper battery provides a steady power and can be used as both super capacitor and high energy battery. Paper batteries have the potential to power the next generation of electronics, medical devices and hybrid vehicles, allowing for radical new designs and medical technologies. The operation principle, manufacturing and working of paper batteries are discussed in detail
