INTRODUCTION
In the world of Dr. Radhakrishna, “The poems of Gitanjali are the offerings of the finite to the infinite “ Gitanjali is Tagore’s auto biography, but at the same time it is the voice- of our own soul. Its central theme is the realization of God through self-purification, love constant prayer, bhakti, dedication & surrender before God, through service to humanity & through ‘Karma Yoga’ & detachment from the wordly pleasures & desires without renouncing the world.
Rabindranath Tagore is a versatile writer. He is often called the Bengali-Shelly. R.N.Tagore is a blend of mystic romanticist, realist, humanist & lyricist. He has been evaluated a great deal, more specifically in the west as a mystic & romantic poet. He is a poet of man, & his work is a poem of gold by a saint in the beautiful pastureland of God. He is a mystic poet because of his strong belief in God, belief in the Immortality of soul & this treatment of death as a gateway to eternal life. He is a poet of the whole world. He has sympathy for the suffering human, for the poor & the down- trodden, for the under-dog & the exploited. His humanism is a part & parcel of his socialism, not of the communist type, but of the humananist mein, without violence & without the talk of revolution. That was a humanistic approach dignity for man, proper human values, social justice & above all, mutual respect for each other the signs of a new social order or Tagore’s dream which he wanted to see in the growing Asian countries.
Rabindranath Tagore is India’s pride & glory. He is the only Indian writer who has been awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. In the recognition of his international reputation as a poet he has been popularly known as Viswakabi Rabindranath Tagore. He has born in Calcutta on May 16, 1861, Maharsi Devendranath Tagore. Who was the father of R.N.Tagore was fabulously wealthy & eminent personality. He did not believe in any formal education. Therefore Rabindranath was not sent to school. He was privately taught at home by tutors. After receiving his early education at home, he went to London in 1887 to study law here. However he soon came back. India & commenced writing. He believed in the ideal of international brotherhood. Tagore was born in a time when a shot of spiritual & cultural a wakening was taking place. He wrote about fifty plays, forty volumes of novels & many shot stories besides several collections of poems & essays.
Tagore’s poetic career is broadly divided into thrice phases: pre-Gitanjali periods Dr. Chakravorty writes, “In the pre-Gitanjali period, he studies man in relation to God. In the post-Gitanjali period, he studies man in relation to man”. The pre-Gitanjali period is 1875-1911. The Gitanjali period covers years from 1912 to 1913. The post Gitanjali period begins from 1914 & ends with Tagore’s death in 1941 on the whole he composed over 1000 poems & more than 2000 songs the year between 1901& 1910 were the year of trouble & turmoil for the R.N. Tagore . His peace was disturbed. He was said, so Tagore began to compose Gitanjali to find peace a rest. It was search of peace that he wrote Gitanjali. In 1912 he translated it into English on November 15, 1913 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for it. In 1915 he was knighted by the British Govt. of India.
Gitanjali is a blend of a number of themes the relationship between God & man individual & humanity. It justifies the ways of man to God & vice versa. It expresses in perfect language permanent human impulses and thus passes the test of great poetry as laid down by T.S. Eloit. Here poetry has became a revelation, an in cantation, like vedio mantras & the poemasa whole opens the closed petals our lotus heart. It is an xray of inner reality.
