Staying healthy in the United States for UB college students
Staying healthy is an important aspect in human life. Everybody wishes to keep their-selves away from diseases and other deadly health problems. One major part, which is the most common in the universities worldwide, is Student Health Center. In the University of Bridgeport, the Student Health Center is located at (60 Lafayette St., Bridgeport, CT 06604). The office hours are (Monday through Friday, 8:30 am-4:30 pm). Our meeting was with Mrs. Lopez who is the director of the student health services at the University of Bridgeport. “It is now my six year working at the UB, and I truly enjoy working at this university...” she said.
Our topic focuses on staying healthy in the United States for UB student.In general, health issues are a big concern across the universities worldwide because they are places for thousands of international students. Students come from different countries and nationalities, which is why there should be a big concern about health issues. Keeping track on student’s health is extremely important.Going back to the topic, Mrs. Lopez mentioned to some common reasons that prevent student to come to class such as feeling homesick which is most common, health reasons, changing eating habits… etc. As we know, the winter season is coming, and there will be some diseases that spread easily such as flu. Also, we were told that how to prevent spreading such a flu to other people. Washing hands often, coughing into sleeve, staying at home in case of having fluare the most important things that everybody should do when they have flu. Then she mentioned how to differentiate between flu and cold. It was about the symptoms of both diseases. However, there are many common symptoms of flu and cold, but the symptoms seem to be worse in flu, and milder in cold. For UB students is important to get flu shot each year. This protects against the flu.Another point that she mentioned was about self-care for example, eating healthy, no smoking, avoid alcohol, and sleeping well. It is important for students to sleep well at least 8-10 hours a night. Also, we were told that how to prevent infestation of Bed Bugs and Cockroaches and how they look like. About the Bed Bugs, the best thing to prevent them is keeping the house clean. Moreover, the regular poisons (sprays) do not work to exterminate them. The professional exterminator is needed. Keeping the mattress and bed cleaned are important. Also, it is the landlord’sresponsibility to solve this problem. About Cockroaches, they love food. Keeping the kitchen cleaned,taking out the trash every night and using sealed trash can, cleaning up the mess… etc are the solution to prevent them.
Finally, I have learned how to stay healthy and what are the important things that every student should know. There was some important information about health issues that I had not had any idea about them before this meeting. I want to thank Mrs. Lopez about spending time with us in that meeting , and Dr. Zhengping Wu the instructore of ENG-400, and Mr.AbdelrahmanElleithy.
