Pyrromethene class of compounds and its derivatives are used in various fields such as sensors, lasers and medicinal chemistry. The preparation of Pyrromethene 546 which is a well known laser dye involves usage of harsh conditions and special precautions for carrying out the reaction taking 2,4 dimethyl pyrrole as a reactant which is prepared from ethyl acetoacetate in three steps. We have prepared Pyrromethene 546 in a single pot reaction using 2,4-dimethyl pyrrole, acetyl chloride and boron trifluoride under milder conditions. Pyrromethene 546 was subjected to various electrophilic substitution reactions such as, acetylation and nitration to give acetyl and nitro derivatives. The products were characterized and properties studied.
