It is now a global leader in viscose staple fibre (VSF), the country's largest merchant producer of sponge iron and the second-largest caustic soda maker in India; and poised to be
India's largest cement manufacturer.
Grasim Industries Limited, a flagship company of the Aditya Birla Group, ranks among India's largest private sector companies, with consolidated net turnover of Rs.184 billion and a consolidated net profit of Rs.22 billion (FY2009).
Starting as a textiles manufacturer in 1948, today Grasim's businesses comprise viscose staple fibre (VSF), cement, chemicals and textiles. Its core businesses are VSF and cement, which contribute to over 90 per cent of its revenues and operating profits.
The Aditya Birla Group is the world’s largest producer of VSF, commanding a 23 per cent global market share. BIRLA CELLULOSIC
BIRLA CELLUCOSIC, a unit of GRASIM INDUSTRIES LTD., was established in the year 1994 by Late Shri I.H.PARIKH. IT is located at the Bay of Kim River at Kharach, Kosamba (R.S.) and spread over 500 acres in kharach village. The unit here has transformed the barren scope of Kharach into one that pulsates with activity and cost of project was 320 crores but now its cost is 500 crores. The-state-of-art VSF manufacturing facility at Kharach was rightly christened Birla Cellulosic, as its primary objective was to redefine the Cellulosic fibre in terms of Quality, cost and its Applications. With a rated capacity of 154 TPD VSF productions, it is designed to meet varied customer requirements from two streams of 77 TPD and their target is to achieve 300 TPD by the year 2004. SODIUM SULPHATE ( Na2So4 ), a byproduct, precipitated as a result of reaction between Caustic soda (NaOH) and Sulphuric Acid (H2so4), is recovered from the system at a rate of 60% with 99% purity.
The Birla Cellulosic at Kharach is one of the units that have taken birth due to Grasim’s expertise in the field of VSF. The ADITYA BIRLA GROUP conceived the 154 tons per day (TPD) Greenfield, state-of-the-art Birla Cellulosic project in the year 1994, and keeping in mind globalization, economical liberalization and tough competition. The main aim was to set up a fibre-producing unit, which can match the world-class quality, increase the demand for fibre in the market and provide complete quality satisfaction to customers. Birla Cellulosic’s vision was written, even before it was taken-off the drawing board – to reverse the declining trend in the VSF life cycle.
