Broadly speaking grievance means any real or imaginary feeling of dissatisfaction and injustice which an employee has about his employment relationship. According to Dale S. Beach, “grievance is any dissatisfaction or feeling of injustice in connection with one’s employment situation that is brought to the attention of management.” In the words of Michael J. Jucious, “a grievance is any discontent or dissatisfaction, whether expressed or not, whether valid or not, arising out of anything connected with the company that an employee thinks, believes or even feels, is unfair, unjust or inequitable.
A grievance is a specific, formal dissatisfaction expressed through an identified procedure. A complaint, on
The other hand, is a dissatisfaction that is not expressed through the formal grievance procedure.
Causes of Grievances
Grievances may arise due to the following reasons:
1. Grievances arising out of Working Conditions:
1. Poor physical conditions of work place.
2. Very tight production standards.
3. Non-availability of proper tools and machines.
4. Unplanned changes in schedules and procedures.
5. Failure to maintain proper discipline.
6. Mismatch of the worker with the job.
7. Poor relationship with the supervisor.
2. Grievances arising from Management Policy:
1. Wage rates and method of wage payment.
2. Overtime and incentive schemes.
3. Seniority.
4. Transfers.
5. Promotion, demotion and discharge.
6. Lack of opportunities for career growth.
7. Hostility towards trade union.
3. Grievances arising from Alleged Violation of:
1. Company rules and regulations.
2. Past practice.
3. Central or State laws.
4. Responsibilities of management.
4. Grievances arising out of Personal Maladjustment:
1. Over-ambition.
2. Excessive self-esteem.
3. Impractical attitude to life.
