Traffic Management Information System for Kathmandu Abstract
Abstract
Traffic Management Information System for Kathmandu (EKTMIS) aims to be a web based GIS project.
EKTMIS is built for the traffic police and general user. The main target of the system is to display the
congestion notification on a map providing the well user interface along with the congestion duration
and its type. The traffic will update the congestion by entering into the system with administrator name
and password. It helps the traffic in decision making i.e. he can manage the number of traffic to be
disperse to minimize the congestion. General users simply watch the congestion area and judge their
appropriate route.
Beside the congestion functionality, this system provides a well user interface for providing timely
information about the road type, accident rate, location, vehicle speed on particular type of roads in the
context of Kathmandu valley. In addition to this it also provides the contextual information such as
Petrol pump, Bus Park, Bus stand and Hospital. The system is also able to suggest road user to provide
the shortest route by informing the congestion areas on the map. The area chosen for the project
implementation is around the Kupondole, Baneshwor, Maitighar, Tripureshwor, Singhadurbar, Old
Buspark, Ratnapark, Sundhara. It falls around the EXTENT 85.30431 27.681119 85.346557 27.7100 in
GCS_WGS_1984 projection system.
An iterative waterfall model is chosen for the development of our system. The strategy followed in this
web based GIS application is hybrid approach the application intend to be free software. It uses open
source software packages such MapServer, PostGIS, and PostgreSQL. We have used the MS4W package
in server side which is the bundle of ‐ Apache HTTP Server 2.2.3, PHP 5.1.6, MapServer CGI 4.10.0,PHP
MapScript 4.10.0.We have also used ESRI's ArcGIS software during development. The tier 3 architecture
has been used during the development of the system. Tier 1 is User Interface. Tier 2 is the Functional
Module. That processes data and consists of Apache web server, Mapserver4.0, PHP programs and C++
programs, and tier 3 is postgreSQL database system.
