INTRODUCTION
A voltage regulator is a circuit that supplies a constant voltage, regardless of changes in load currents
It is easier to use IC voltage regulators due to the following advantages
Low cost
High reliability
Small size
Excellent performance
TYPES
IC Voltage regulators are of the following types
Fixed output voltage regulators
Variable output voltage regulators
Switching regulators
Special regulator
They all are grouped as
Linear regulators
Switching regulators
The Switching element dissipates negligible power in either ON or OFF state. Hence it is more efficient than linear regulators.
ADVANTAGES
The adjustable voltage regulators have following advantages over fixed types
Improved system performance by having line & load regulation
Improved overload protection with wide operating temperature range
Improved system Reliability with 100% thermal limit burn-in.
