Wear plates are composite plates having a highly alloyed wear resistant surfacing on a low carbon steel base. Wear plates are used to increase the life time of the machineries or the raw material handling equipments by avoiding wear factors. By employing this, we can reduce the wear & tear which occurs inside the coal bunkers. Commonly, there are two basic categories of wear plate used in the industries such us :1) Tungsten carbide (W2C) 2) Chromium carbide (CrC). Among these two, Chromium Carbide wear plates are used to combat abrasion, erosion, impact and also the places where temperature is below 600`C. The Tungsten Carbide wear plates were used in high temperature and erosion applications.
In this work, wear & tear in fabricated parts such as coal bunkers in thermal power plant have been studied. This study includes many tests such as erosion, hardness, abrasion and spectroscopy. Different qualities of the wear plates have been achieved by varying the composition. Thus after analyzing the characteristic of wear plate we have found that the total life time has been increased more than 20 times then the original life time of Coal bunker. Wear plates can be cut using methods such as plasma arc, laser jet and water jet. And it can be installed into the structures using a variety of methods including plug welding, stud welding and bolting.
In General, Chromium Carbide is preferred in coal bunkers because of its efficiency and as well it reduces the initial cost in fabricating them. The cost of the wear plates will be low and replacement of the originally fabricated parts can be avoided.
