What is a smart/modern material?
Modern materials are developed through the invention of new or
improved processes, for example, as a result of ‘man’ made materials or
human intervention. In other words, not naturally occurring changes. They
are altered to perform a particular function. Many smart and modern
materials are developed for specialised applications but some become
available for general use.
Smart materials respond to differences in temperature or light and change in some way. They are called smart because they sense conditions in their environment and respond to those conditions. Smart materials appear
to “think” and some have “memory” as they revert back to their original state.
What are the applications of Smart Textiles?
Smart and modern textiles
Fibre and fabric technological developments have created a whole
range of smart and modern textiles which can be used in many applications.
These textiles have been used for functional sportswear,
medical and safety wear and fashion clothing. Smart fabrics have been
developed to create a sense of wellbeing – they have anti-stress or
calm inducing properties.
Smart textiles have a number of medical uses. Fabrics can be encapsulated with substances required by the body or antiseptics. Allergy control fabrics can be used in clothing, linens, towels and carpets. Many synthetic fibres have moisture management properties.
Softswitch technology is developing wearable electronics.
Types of Intelligent Textiles: Biomimetics
Biomimetics – ‘The extract of good design from nature’Examples of Biomemetics are:Speedo – ‘Fastskin’ – developed through the observation of the shark and how it swims fast through water. Garment & fabric technologists worked with Marine biologists to stimulate a sharkskin fabric and suit structure, together with computer scientists, using the latest body scanning technology to create a second skin.
Types of Intelligent Textiles: Functional
What are Functional Textiles?Functional Textiles are designed specifically for an end purpose with added attributes. Fabrics are now available to;Help protect exposure to UV radiation for swimmersAnti allergy, absorbent & antibacterial products used in medical applicationsFabrics incorporating moisture management systems – used for speedy evaporation of sweatReflective textiles for safety garmentInsulation & buoyancy fabrics for activities in water.
