INTRODUCTION
In the automotive industry, there is an increasing need to save fuel and to
reduce the emissions of carbon dioxide.
2. This motivates automobile manufacturers to decrease the weight of automobile.
3. Reduction of thickness of steel sheets in the 1970’s.
4. Substituting Aluminium for cast iron and Steel in the 1980’s and the early 1990’s.
The new technology that allow the production of ductile iron parts as thin
as 2mm, known generally as Thin Wall Ductile Iron (TWDI) castings.
THIN WALL DUCTILE IRON CASTING
A recent trend in vehicle component design has been toward a higher strength and a lighter weight to save materials and energy.
Producing light weight ductile iron casting by reducing the thickness of casting to approximately 2-3mm with high strength/weight ratio to make thin wall Ductile iron casting (TWDI).
GATING AND FEEDING SYSTEM
Production of thin wall ductile iron casting is critical, since the presence of small defects that are negligible in large castings can cause the rejection of a thin wall parts ,Gating system plays a vital role in sound casting.
The main criteria to be fulfilled by a gating system are:-
1. Economy of size.
2. The feeding of mould at the required speed.
3. The delivery of only liquid metal into the mould cavity.
