The functions of engine control and the real time monitoring is done by the microprocessor which is called the ECU(electronic control unit). reduction of tailpipe emissions, enhancing fuel economy, improving overall drivability etc are the functions of the engine control system. Almost all the standard four wheelers have a engine management system having fuel injection capability.
