ABSTRACT
THE METER READING BY MANPOWER
Inefficient system of billing and collection
Less efficient, error prone and costly
THE METER READING USING GSM
Provides billing details on merely sending a text message
Project comprises of GSM module SIM-300
Microcontroller AT89C51 with energy meter to read the units
OBJECTIVES
Upon completion, we would like our meter to be able to do the following things:
Measure electricity consumption accurately.
Display account balance.
Communicate with the user using GSM module
Warn the user of low account balance
Cut power off when there is zero credit on the account.
introduction
Present power usage reading is done manually
Requires large no of labour operators
Long working hours to accomplish the work
Printed billing may get lost
Delayed due to bad weather
Prone to error
Through GSM
Electricity used is calculated by energy meter
Passed to microcontroller(8051)
Then to GSM modem
Whole process is fast and error free
COMPONENT USED
Microcontroller AT89C51 (8051 family)
GSM module SIM 300
Crystal Oscillator 11.0592MHz

POWER SUPPLY
Brief description of operation: Gives out well regulated +5V output, output current capability of 100 mA
Circuit complexity: Very simple and easy to build
Circuit performance: Very stable +5V output voltage, reliable operation
Availability of components: Easy to get, uses only very common basic components
ELECTRICITY METER
An electricity meter or energy meter is a device that measures the amount of electric energy consumed by a residence, business or an electrically powered device.
Electricity meters are typically calibrated in billing units, the most common one being the kilowatt hour (kWh).
"Time of day" metering allows electric rates to be changed during a day, to record usage during peak high-cost periods and off-peak, lower-cost, periods.
FEATURES
4K Bytes of In-System Reprogrammable Flash Memory(ROM)
Fully Operation: 0 Hz to 24 MHz
128 x 8-bit Internal RAM
32 Programmable I/O Lines
Two 16-bit Timer/Counters
Six Interrupt Sources
Programmable Serial Channel
RS 232
Earlier RS232 was termed as EIA232F
Was used as a standard port for communication between different devices.
Can be defined as point to point communication between the (DTE) and (DCE).
Called a serial port
Comes in two different variants of D-style
9 pin(DB 9 connector )
25 pin(DB 25 connector )
Only three pins are required for communication
GSM MODULE
A GSM modem is a specialized type of modem which accepts a SIM card, and operates over a subscription to a mobile operator, just like a mobile phone.
From the mobile operator perspective, a GSM modem looks just like a mobile phone. When a GSM modem is connected to a computer, this allows the computer to use the GSM modem to communicate over the mobile network.
GSM modems are most frequently used to provide mobile internet connectivity.
GSM modems can be a quick and efficient way to get started with SMS.
CONCLUSION
Proposed methodology is used to generate prepaid card for usage of electricity
Generates the message to the consumers either by day basis or weekly basis as per consumer requirements
Will minimize the wastage of electricity and saves the power for future generation
GSM network provides
Efficient wireless automatic meter reading distribution control and
Making fast billing system, accurate, effective and
Reduction of labor cost of operation
