Electricity can only be generated when the train is slowing down using a technique called regenerative braking. If it tries to generate while the train is accelerating or moving at constant speed, the engine of the locomotive will consume more power to overcome the EMF generated in the wheel dynamo, making its final objective of generating electricity, expensive.
