SEISMIC ALERT THROUGH GSM NETWORK
SEISMIC ALERT THROUGH GSM NETWORK.DOC (Size: 734.5 KB / Downloads: 73) Introduction: Earth Quakes strike without warning. Every year thousands of people die because of this. The result in damage can be minimized by alerting the people about the occurrence of natural calamities i.e., like earth quakes ,tsunamis etc. .For this purpose ,we use advanced technologies like GSM technology. GSM stands for GLOBAL SYSTEM for MOBILE COMMUNICATION. On 26 December 2004, a large earthquake of 9.0 on the Richter scale occurred west of Aceh in Sumatra, Indonesia. The epicenter was located at latitude 3.1ºN and longitude 95.5ºE, about 680 kilometres northwest of Kuala Lumpur and 590 kilometres west of Penang. This earthquake has generated a massive and disastrous Indian Ocean-wide tsunami that struck the coasts of a number of countries in the region with high “tidal” waves. This unprecedented tsunami had killed hundreds of thousands of people in several countries bordering the Indian Ocean. WORKING This system simply monitors the earth vibrations and generates AN ALERT SIGNAL WHEN THE LEVEL OF EARTH VIBRATIONS CROSSES A THERSHOLD. Generally the threshold will be of 5.5 on Richter scale[ because earthquakes of magnitude less than 5.5 can hardly affect the buildings]. Overview of Tsunami Early Warning System: The tsunami warning system will have several components comprising of various sub-systems that provide real-time monitoring, alert of seismic and tsunami activities as well as timely dissemination of earthquake/tsunami warning, advisory and information. These include Seismic Network Sub-System: The national seismological network will form an integral part of the national earthquake and tsunami early warning system at the National Centre as well as the Regional Centre as it provides the first level alert on the possible occurrence of tsunami. After the issuance of initial tsunami warning, additional data from the seismic network is use to either support the decision to continue or cancel the warning. This process is disruptive and has large economic impacts on the country. Deep Ocean Buoy Network Sub-System: Buoys equipped with bottom pressure sensor positioned in the deep-ocean have been proven to detect the early passage of a tsunami before it reaches shallow waters and causes destruction along the coasts. These signals are very useful since it is the first set of instrumentation that confirms the generation of a tsunami and its probable size. The position of the buoy should be based on a study that would maximize the lead time of states to issue a warning to communities at risk. In the event that a tsunami is generated, the equipments on the buoy will detect the tsunami wave and relay this information via satellite communication to the server in the National Tsunami Early Warning Center. SUM UP: This earthquake alert system senses earthquake waves, transmits these discrete magnitude values to a central place via.. GSM cell phone network, and uses computer –based decision making to deliver alert signals to the identified receivers placed at different towns and cities for both public and government consumption.
