Zero Discharge Toilet System is eco-friendly toilet system. We all know that from trains human excreta falls on the track and on the railway platforms. So, all this excreta or urine creates pollution that is very harmful for our health and also for the railway tracks because the liquid which comes out from toilets of trains damage the railway tracks with corrosion. So to avoid all these problems our research departments have find the solution i.e., Zero Discharge Toilet System. By using zero discharge toilet system firstly, the damage of railway tracks from corrosion is eliminated. Secondly, it is environment friendly and the third one is it protects the scenic beauty of stations. By using the zero discharge toilet system we can produce manure with the solid waste material which exit from the trains and also we can reuse the liquid waste for the flushing water with the help of the water treatment process. So, we have all the above results for the Zero Discharge Toilet System. This toilet system is very helpful to eliminate waste from the railway tracks and railway platforms.
INTRODUCTION :-
Efforts are on in several directions for development of Environment Friendly Toilets in trains. A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed by Ministry with defence. Research and Development Organization (DRDO)for Joint Technology development using Defence Research & Development Establishment (DRDE) bio-digester technology for passenger coach toilet systems. Designs have been developed jointly by RESO & DRDO based on this technology and Indian Railways Production Units have been instructed to manufacture two rakes based on this technology. Zero Discharge Toilet System (ZDTS) has been developed jointly by Research Design & Standards Organization (RDSO) and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kanpur. Efforts are also in hand to carry out trials of vacuum retention type toilets on Shatabdi Trains. ZDTS has been tried out on one coach based on design jointly developed by RDSO, Lucknow and IIT, Kanpur. The action is in hand by RDSO to carry out extended trials o one rake based on this technology. Suitable technology option for Indian Railways operating conditions are yet to be established for which Railway is working on various technology options as described above. Further course of action regarding adoption of suitable technology mix for all trains will be taken, based on the outcome of trials with different technology options. NEED OF GREEN TOILET :- Zero-Defection on the ground (Linked to the policy announced by Ministry of Rural Development which envisages total sanitation by 2012 and elimination of open defection all over the country) WORKING PRINCIPLE :- This zero discharge toilets are developed by Department of Civil Engineering, IIT Kanpur. In these toilets, the solid and liquid parts are separated, collected and reused. A specialised structure ‘separator\' diverges The liquid (urine and flushed water) in the outward direction and is collected in a tank while the solid part in the form of slurry is dropped into another chamber called retention tank. The fecal slurry is collected and converted into manure through composting. The liquid is further treated and reused for flushing the toilets. SALIENT FEATURES :- *Easy to install with no sewerage requirement. *No electrical power supply or motor driven devices required. *Hygienic conditions are maintained at the same level as in conventional water borne systems. *Can easily be operated and maintained by the workers. *Reduce the fresh water demand for various activities like flushing and gardening. BENIFITS OF GREEN TOILETS :- *Easy to install with no sewerage requirement. *No electrical power supply or motor driven devices required. *Hygienic conditions are maintained at the same level as in conventional water borne systems. *Can easily be operated and maintained by the workers. *Reduce the fresh water demand for various activities like flushing and gardening.
