DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM

Decision support system (DSS) assist management decision making by combining data, sophisticated analytical models and tools and user-friendly software into single powerful system that can support semi structured or unstructured decision making.
DSS provides users with flexible sets of tools and capabilities for analyzing important blocks of data.

TYPES OF DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM

Model-driven DSS:- Primarily stand- alone systems that uses some type of model to perform “what – if’’ and other kinds of analysis. Such systems are developed by end users or groups not under central information control.
Eg:- Cargo booking freight forwarding
Data-driven DSS:- A system that supports decision making by allowing users to extract & analyze useful information that was previously buried in large data base.

COMPONENTS OF DSS

DSS Database:- is a collection of current or historical data from a number of application groups. It can be a small PC Database on massive data warehouse.
DSS Software system:- collection of software tools that are used for data analyses such as OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) tools, datamining tools, or a collection of mathematical and analytical models.
Data mining:- using a special purpose software to analyze from a data warehouse to finds hidden patterns & trends.
OLAP:- a capability of some management decision support and executive information systems that supports interactive examination & manipulation of data from many perspective.

GOAL SEEKING ANALYSIS

Also called a how can analysis
- Makes repeated changes to selected variable until a chosen
variable reaches a target value.
Eg:- Increasing the cost of advertising until sales reaches Rs.10 crores
