While the transducer that is applied to medical diagnostic systems or NDE systems is ringing, the long pulse duration degrades the axial resolution. The wave can be cushioned by attaching an acoustically absorbent material to the back of the transducer which couples the ultrasonic energy out of the active element. If the acoustic impedance of the support is closed to that of the element, most of the energy will be attached to the support. As a result, the transducer will have a shorter pulse. This study will present a method for making carbon fiber composite materials for backing with controllable characteristics. The acoustic impedance of the support varied from 14 MR to 34 MR have been achieved by the composites.
