Experimental and emission tests have been performed for a single-cylinder four-cylinder diesel engine to determine the optimum operating conditions of this engine when used as a hybrid power unit. The operating parameters studied included; (BSFC), exhaust emission (NO / sub x /, CO, CO / sub 2 / and O / sub 2 /) and engine life. The results indicate that the lower BSFC of the engine is found when the engine rotates around 1 kW of load when the engine speed oscillates between 1900 rpm-2700 rpm. As the engine speed is kept constant, the minimum level of BSFC is less than 300 g / kW.hr at around 1900 rpm. The best operating conditions of the engine, for low emissions, are at a speed of 2500 rpm. It was found that the nitrogen oxides remain within the acceptable level (below 180 ppm) for such diesel engine.
