INTRODUCTION:
Data communication is the active process of transferring data from one point to another. A "LINK" is a physical communication pathway that transfers data from one device to another.
A "COMPUTER NETWORK" is a collection of computers and perpheral devices (network components) connected by a communication links that allows the network components to work together. The network components may be located at any remote location or in the same location. In any case data communication is the glue that holds the network together.
One such network is a "LOCAL AREA NETWORK" a communication system which permits the inter connection of networks. The computers in a network may be connected in various ways. A LAN is inter-linked system where personal computers share common resources like disks, printers etc...
"TOPOLOGY" can be defined as the geometric arrangement of wofkstations and the links among them. Various topologies include Bus, Ring, Star, Tree, Mesh and Hybrid topologies. It is called the structure of the network.
Line Configuration:
It refers to the way wo or more devices attach to a disk.
Point-to-Point Line Configuration:
It provides a dedicated link between tow devices. The entire capacity of the channel is reserved for transmission between those two devices.
Multi Point Line Configuration:
It is the one in which more than two devices share a common link.
Work Station:
A workstation is any personal computer capable of supporting the hardware and software necessary to connect in a LAN.
User work station or Client:
These are the micro computers on the network, which have a primary responsibility to an individual user.
Server work station:
Resources attached to server are shared by all users. They serve to other workstation.
