Measuring Engine Wear
Introduction:-
Engine wear is referred to the loss of dimensions that take place in the Engine.
When engine runs the mating surface rubbing causing wear & tear of the surface.
Inspection and analysis of parameters such as roundness, straightness, cylindricity & diameter.
Objectives
Analyze wear in an internal combustion engine.
Utilize measurement equipment.
Record accurate measurements.
Find durability of engine.
Wear-measuring techniques
Weighing.
Mechanical gauging.
Chemical analysis.
Optical.
Wear mechanisms:-
Physical wear mechanisms
Wear due to friction(surfaces slide) in a cylinder, adhesion, scuffing(lubrication is inadequate) and abrasion(dust particle).
Chemical wear mechanisms
The phenomenon of corrosive wear in a cylinder occurs as a result of low or high operating temp.
Removal of the lubricant’s protective film.
Measuring Cylinder Bore
Measuring Ring End Gap
Measuring the CrankshaftMag. Journal
Measuring Connecting Rod Clearance
Measuring the Camshaft Lobes
Measuring the Camshaft Journals
Rotate Piston to TDC on Compression
Measuring Valve Tappet Clearance
Adjusting Tappet Clearance
If valve clearance is not in the acceptable range, they must be adjusted.
If clearance is too great - Re-face seat and valve face, then grind stem end to appropriate clearance.
If clearance is too small - Grind stem end only.
conclusion
There are various methods for measuring engine wear and there are several causes of it but the technological development in the metallurgy and manufacturing processes giving us solution for minimizing engine wear.
