Solar Power Satellite (SPS) is an energy system that collects solar energy in space and transmits it to the ground. It has been seen as a promising infrastructure for solving global environmental and energy problems for humans. One of the most important technologies for the SPS is the wireless transmission of energy from the geostationary orbit to the ground. Microwave energy transmission has been researched and proven for more than 40 years, but still requires more research on high-efficiency power conversion and high-precision beam control for the SPS application.
The typical WPT is a point-to-point power transmission. For the WPT, it is better to concentrate the power to the receiver. It was shown that the power transmission efficiency can approach 100%. The famous power fuses of the transmitting antenna are the Gaussian taper, the Taylor distribution and the Chebychev distribution. This conicity of the transmitting antenna is commonly used for the suppression of the lateral lobes. It is appropriate to increase the power transmission efficiency. As for the power transmission efficiency of the WPT, there are some good optical approaches in Russia. The future and appropriate application of the WPT through the microwave is a space solar energy (SPS) satellite. The SPS is a gigantic satellite designed as an electric power plant orbiting the Earth's geostationary orbit (GEO). It consists mainly of three segments; solar collector to convert solar energy into direct current (DC), DC to microwave converter, and a large antenna to transmit microwave energy to the ground.
