The total number of trees, a first initiative of this type in India, was made in 2011 in all urban areas of Gujarat. The enumeration data were analyzed for tree cover and density, per capita tree cover, and carbon storage in urban areas. About 6.55 million trees grow in 167 urban areas (municipal corporations and municipalities) with an average density of trees of 18.9 trees / ha. Thirty-four cities and towns have a suitable tree cover with a tree density greater than 30 trees / ha and the rest have a low cover. Canopy cover (53.9%) and tree density (152 trees / ha) in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat, are the highest in India; Thus Gandhinagar can be listed among the greenest cities in the world. The status of tree cover in small and medium-sized cities has also been discussed in the context of increasing urbanization. The need to have an adequate number of trees as environmental infrastructure in urban areas to address growing environmental problems has been highlighted. Tree cover has been discussed in some of the urban areas of India and other countries to develop a minimum tree cover rule in urban areas of India.
