What is concept car ?
“Concept cars are an expression of dreams, emotion and inspiration – and a vision of how to progress reality. They allow us to show the world how our designers and engineers are constantly probing the boundaries of their imagination and their creativity.”
difference of concept cars to the other cars
Concept cars are idea cars ,dream cars to showcased in motor shows or in commercials to know the people’s reaction towards new, mostly radical, and innovative designs.
They aren’t built for sale to the public. Many don’t even run.
These cars may have new and radical designs, ranging from gull wing doors, to six wheeled designs.
These cars may be made out of non-traditional, expensive and exotic materials ranging from paper to carbon-fiber alloys.
These are cars that use other sources of energy to power up and move the vehicle without the use of gasoline.
Concept cars history
William C.Durant was the first U.S. automaker and he made the first vehicle. This vehicle was simple in design and it looked like the fig. shown.
In 1909 Henry Ford had created the model ‘T’. This simple, no-nonsense car was a huge hit. The attraction of the Model T Ford was that its price never increased.
In the mid-1930s, Harley earl build a special car, was named the Buick Y-job. The Y-job had the new features like It had a convertible top that opened and closed with push button.
In 1941 the Chrysler Corporation unveiled the thunderbolt and Newport. Like the Y-job, it had hidden head-lights and a power convertible roof. But the thunderbolt’s wide, fat body looked even more futuristic than the Y-job. The Newport was a very long and elegant machine. Its most unusual feature was its separate front and back passenger’s compartment.
Some concept cars
BMW Lovos Concept Car
Technology description
It has 260 identical, exchangeable pieces which are fixed with a hinge on a substructure.
The individual pieces are movable, which allows the surface of the vehicle to be closed – like the scales of a fish – or opened to the environment.
These pieces work like airbrakes and are also photovoltaic, following the movement of the sun when the vehicle is stationary.
The pieces of the covered wheels are also functional: as soon as the vehicle starts driving, 12 pieces per wheel change their formation and move inside, just like a turbine.
The Flake Concept Car
Technology Description
The Flake is covered in hinged carbon-fiber pieces.
Each one is connected by carbon nanotubes to tiny solenoids that can make them stand up or lay flat
When the speed of car is high all the flakes lie flat , but when you turn, all the flakes on one side of the car will stand up, helping lock the car down to the road.
Its wheels are made out of twelve independently extendable leg-things, allowing for an adjustable contact surface.
Their 12 “legs” extend and contract in response to the road surface and vehicle speed, the bottom part of the “wheel” flattens at high speeds.
Conclusion
Concept car designs are mostly radical changes from the material used to build them, designs that could improve efficiency, look & appearance and other factors, and the power sources from which it will derive its energy. One car review stated that concept cars will greatly improve the state of the environment if widely used, but the only problem with these types of cars is that they will be very expensive; leading to only millionaires could afford who are only a handful.
Thus the concept cars are all about the future. These are a way for designers to try new ideas and new technologies outside the box. These are a way for automakers to show what their car of the future might look like.
