Abstracts: THE SELECTION OF CANTILEVER & COUNTER FORT RETAINING WALL FOR A PROJECT IS INFLUENCED BY THE IMPORTANT PARAMETERS INVOLVED ARE UNIT WEIGHT OF BACKFILL SOIL, SOIL-CONCRETE FRICTION FACTOR AND BEARING CAPACITY OF SOIL. THE BASE LENGTH AND IT COMPONENTS NAMELY TOE LAND HEEL LENGTHS, AND BASE THICKNESS ARE HIGHLY DEPENDENT UPON THESE FACTORS AND VARY SHARPLY WITH STEM HEIGHT AND SURCHARGE. THE SELECTION OF RETAINING WALL ALSO DEPENDS UPON INDIVIDUAL’S EXPERIENCE OF THE DESIGNER. THIS EXPERIENCE MAY LEAD TO THE SELECTION OF THAT TYPE OF RETAINING WALL WHICH IS NOT OPTIMUM. THIS REPORT PRESENTS A TOOL TO ASSIST THE DESIGNER IN MAKING THAT DECISION. WE HAVE HERE TRIED TO STUDY CANTILEVER RETAINING WALL & COUNTER FORT RETAINING WALL USED ACROSS THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY AND METHODOLOGY USED FOR BOTH TYPE OF RETAINING WALL RESPECTIVELY. THE TYPES OF RETAINING WALL LIKE CANTILEVER RETAINING WALL & COUNTER FORT RETAINING WALL WITH THEIR RELATIVE MERITS & DEMERITS. LATER IN THE PROJECT WORK WE WOULD ALSO STUDYING VARIOUS IMPORTANT COMPONENTS OF RETAINING WALL ALONG WITH THEIR ANALYSIS & DESIGN. AND THE FINAL CONCLUSION OF THE PROJECT WILL BE TO DEVELOP A TOOL USING SPREAD SHEET WHICH WOULD HELP THE DESIGNER TO SELECT THE OPTIMUM RETAINING WALL.
