ANTI-VIRAL DRUGS
These are drugs specially used for treating viral infections like antibiotics for bacteria.
Most of drugs now available to help deal with HIV, HERPES Virus cause of other diseases such as chicken pox, hepatitis B and hepatitis C.
The antiviral drugs are used in treatment of a number of viral infections, or provide protection for a brief period of time. Treatment must be started early to be effective by inhibiting the replicating virus.
ACYCLOVIR:
Posses highest activity against herpes simplex virus.
It posses an acyclic sugar chain which devoid of its hydroxyl group.
STRUCTURAL ACTIVITY RELATIONSHIP:
At N-9 Length of the acyclic side chain.
Hydroxymethylene group replacement any other substituent's (inactive).
9-Alkoxy derivative (herpes simplex, varicella zoster virus)
ADVERSE EFFECTS:
Nausea, Vomiting, Headache, Dizziness, Anorexia, Diahhroea, Skin rashes, Sorethroat ( oral
Local Stinging, Burning, itching and rashes.(Topical )
Thrombophlebitis and Irritation.(I.V)
USES:
Used to treat HIV 1, HIV 2 and Human T-Cells Lymphotrophic Viral Infections.
Combination of Zidovudine and Lamuvudine is for post exposure prophylaxis.
Prevention for neonatal Infections from HIV Infected mothers.
