Abstracts: The need of high precision components has been continuously increasing in various industries such as aerospace, automobile, die mould manufacturing etc. The process gets more complicated while machining difficult to cut “hard” materials & requirement of stringent surface finish is desirable. To meet such, demand completely different clan of manufacturing process have been developed over last few decades. The present work addresses feasibility of implementing one such process namely, Magnetic Abrasive Finishing (MAF) on conventional general purpose machine tool, engine lathe. The report conceptualizes variety of option to develop MAF setup on engine lathe. The options are evaluated and a suitable setup has been fabricated. The same has been attached on saddle of engine lathe. The permanent magnet has been used for generation of magnetic head to hold abrasive particles in an unbounded conditions. A series of experiment are conducted on the setup by varying working gap and rotational speed of work piece. It has been observed that surface finish improves with increase in spindle speed and decrease in working gap. Keywords : Lathe, Magnetic abrasive finishing process(MAFP), surface finish
