The most significant resource of any organisation is often said to be its people.
“HRM is the process of bringing people and organisations together so that the goals of each are met.”
According to Invancevich and Glueck, “HRM is concerned with the most effective use of people to achieve organisational and individual goals”
Features :
Pervasive force i.e. present in all enterprises and at all levels.
Action oriented i.e. it focuses on action rather than on record keeping.
People oriented i.e. HRM is all about people at work, both individuals and groups.
Continuous function i.e. It is not a one shot deal, it cannot be practised only one hour each day or one day a week.
Future-oriented – It helps organisation achieve its long term goals by providing for competent, well motivated employees.
Importance of HRM :
Good HR practice can help in attracting and retaining the best people in the organisation.
Appropriate recruitment and selection identify the best people for available jobs.
It also helps individuals in gaining knowledge and skills.
Good HRM can also motivate organisational members to do outstanding jobs.
Objectives of HRM :
To help the organisation reach its goals
To provide the organisation with well trained and well motivated employees.
To communicate HR policies to all employees
To employ the skills and abilities of the workforce efficiently.
Human Resource Development(HRD)
HRD means developing or tapping hidden qualities in people in order to make them accomplish new functions.
HRD aims at overall development of human resources.
The concept of HRD was given by Len Nadler in 1969 in American Society for Training and Development Conference.
In India, Larsen & Toubro Ltd was the first company, in private sector to introduce this concept.
Beliefs of HRD:
- Human resources are the ,most important assets in the organisation.
- Human resources can be developed to an unlimited extent.
- The maintenance of a healthy working climate and the development of its human resources are the responsibilities of every organisation.
- A healthy organisation climate(openness, trust,collaboration) is essential for developing human resources.
