Physical Fitness and Good Health are two concepts that share a somewhat symbiotic relationship. One can hardly exist without the other automatically being present. However a fundamental difference between the two concepts exists. The concept of Physical Fitness may be aimed more toward the abilities of one’s body to perform certain tasks that may seem physically demanding. Good Health however, focuses more on the state of well-being of both one’s body and mind, in addition to the normal occurrence of bodily functions.
A major factor, upon which good health is hinged, is the consumption of a nutritionally balanced diet. A balanced diet entails eating a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, meats and fish, and dairy products such as milk and cheese. One should however avoid as much as possible, processed foods, even if they belong to one of the aforementioned groups. Processed foods contain a considerable amount of nitrites and other preservatives. Over time, these preservatives can impair the normal functions of one’s immune system, thereby leaving one vulnerable to viruses and diseases. Another major consideration for one’s diet should be the process by which food is cooked. Fried foods contain excessive fat and cholesterol; which build up within and eventually clog one’s arteries. This gives rise to heart disease and even heart attacks. From a health and fitness perspective, it is generally understood that boiled and steamed foods, grilled or baked are the preferred methods of cooking foods. A sometimes overlooked facet of good nutrition is the use of dietary supplements or vitamin supplements. They contain vitamins and micro-nutrients of which one may not get adequate amounts, due to shortfalls of one’s diet.
