MEANING OF AUDIO MANAGER
A music manager (or band manager) handles many career issues for bands and singers and DJs. A music manager is hired by a musician or band to help with determining decisions related to career moves, bookings, promotions, business deals, recording contracts, etc. The role of music managers is extensive and may include similar duties to that of a press agent, promoter, booking agent, business manager (who are usually certified public accountants), tour managers, and sometimes even a personal assistant. Responsibilities of a business manager are often divided among many who manage various aspects of a musical career.
The Advantages&Disadvantages of Audio Manager
) A Personal Manager - Getting a good Personal Manager is crucial. The better he or she is the more comfortable and trusting a record label or A&R is going to be with you. A good PM will advise you on all aspects of your career.
2) An Attorney - An attorney is important because they will be involved in negotiating and structuring the deals you make. Make sure your attorney is as knowledgeable about the music business as possible. Preferably they should specialize in music law.
3) An Agent - Your agent is in charge of booking you to the public (concerts, appearances, etc.) Find out if your agent (and his agency) will be in charge of booking ALL your concerts and appearances and also what is the geographical territory in which he represents you.Your personal manager and attorney will be able to help you in choosing an agent. It is normal for an agent to earn 10% of your gross earnings in the areas in which they render services (typically concert revenue and NOT from record sales, merchandise, song writing and publishing royalties). You may be able to do a lot of what these advisors can do on your own, but if you’re confident in your work, having a reputable representative will be more impressive to a record label, music director, etc…and many times these advisors will work for a percentage of your gross earnings as an artist/songwriter, which means you pay little to nothing out of pocket.
Business Manager
The Business Manager (usually an accountant by trade) manages the income and expenses of the client. Business managers usually take care of making payments to musicians, background singers, roadies, tour managers, etc., on behalf of the artist. They also advise the artist on assets and investments, savings and taxes (local, state, federal, and International). Most artists are unaware that they have tax obligations that relate to their performance and licensing income, CD and merchandise sales, equipment purchases, sponsorship cash, other miscellaneous income, etc
Road Manager
The Road manager normally takes care of logistics while the artist is on tour (or on the road). Duties include making sure that everything on the road is provided as spelled out in the contract and all monies are paid on time. The artist is then left free to concentrate on their performances and not whether the promoter, venue booker or booking agent has met their obligations. The road manager also follows up on items that were promised as part of the contract such as accommodations, per diems, equipment rentals, commissions, etc.
