Abstracts: Bridge is the structure facilitating a communication route for carrying road traffic or other moving loads over a depression or obstruction such as river, stream, channel, road or railway. Bridge is the one of the oldest instruments of our civilization. A bridge named Sardar Bridge (old Narmada Bridge) situated over the river Narmada on the N.H.No-8 at district Bharuch has certain distresses. The bearings of the bridge are not functioning so there is excessive deflection at the center of the span. The expansion joints are working poorly so the downward movement and horizontal expansion exceeds the limit. There are the damages around the deck. Because of all these problems the bridge is closed for the heavy weight vehicles. Only low weight vehicles are allowed to pass over it now-a-days. Another bridge is constructed near by it. But the national highway is passing over it so there is a big traffic conjunction over the bridge and there is a waste of time and money. So it is necessary to repair the old Narmada Bridge to come over this problem. The bearings are not functioning so the replacement of the bearing is required so the deflection at the center of the span can be reduced. Pot Bearing is suitable as per the suitability criteria of the bridge bearing. The replacement of the bearing is suitable to control the deflection at the center of span. Provision of FRP (Fiber Reinforced Polymers) should be done. It is two phased material, composed of fiber and matrix. Fiber carry load and provide stiffness, strength, thermal stability and other structural properties in FRP. Matrix bind fibers together and transferring load to the fiber by adhesion and corfriction. According to Bridge Code of AASTHO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials), expansion of expansion joint is more than 75mm than Finger type expansion joints are suitable. In this bridge Finger type of expansion joints are used. So by replacing expansion joints the problem of poor functioning of expansion joint can be solved. Restrainer provides sufficient stiffness and dumping to limit the relative hinge displacement below a pedestrian value, controls the deflection of the span and intended to achieve an enhanced performance of the expansion joint. Hence an attempt is made in the report to solve the problems arisen in the bridge. From using Code Of Road Bridges of ISA: 6-2010 and AASTHO (American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials) and other reference books the solutions are prepared to repair the bridge and once again the movement of heavy weight vehicles can be possible.
