Introduction
The textile and clothing sector is the largest manufacturing activity in Bangladesh.
It provides direct employment to about 5 million people and
Accounts for 45% of all industrial employment in the country.
The sector contributes to 10% of the country’s GDP, 40% of industrial value addition, and 78% of export earnings.
Major readymade garments exported by Bangladesh are knitted and woven shirts and blouses, trousers, skirts, shorts, jackets, sweaters and sportswear, and other fashion apparel.
Historical Perspective
The RMG business in Bangladesh started in the late 70s with merely a casual & cursory effort. The first consignment of knitwear export was made in 1973 while the first shipment of woven was made in 1977.
Current Position
Today, the textile industry of Bangladesh can be divided into the three main categories: the public sector, handloom sector, and the organized private sector.
Public Sector:
The factories in the public sector enjoy certain privileges such as government funding although the fund may not always be properly utilized.
Handloom Sector:
Handloom sector in Bangladesh consists of more than 0.183 million handloom units with 0.505 million handlooms and about 1 million handloom weavers of which about 50% are female worker. A manpower of about one million weavers, dyers, hand spinners, embroiderers and allied artisans have been using their creative skills into more than 0.30 million active looms to produce around 687 million meters of fabrics annually. However, the inferiority of their machinery, mostly due to their narrow width, means that the fabric production is slow, and usually falls short of the quality needed for export.
Private Sector
The most productive of the three categories is the private sector. Since the owners of such factories are directly affected by their performance, they take an active part in planning, decision making, and management. Most of these factories also have machinery that is superior to those in the two other sectors because the owners are well aware of the connection between their equipment and their profits.

Knitwear Overview
Presently Bangladesh is the 3rd largest knitwear exporter in the world just after China and Turkey.
Knitwear is near about a self-sufficient sector in all respect since currently BKMEA members are supplying 90% of the knit fabric requirements of the sector.
Local yarn suppliers provide around 75% of the total requirement of the sector.
The sector consists of about 261 composite factories; it is to be noted that apart from the composite units many garments have their own dyeing and finishing units. A separate dyeing and finishing industry also has grown up over the time to support the sector.
Bangladeshi knitwear is exported to 93 countries of the world with the EU and the USA being the major export destinations.
Capacity is increasing at a good rate to cope with the future demand of this sector.
Bangladesh has labor forces unparallel in stitching capability and skill at our level.
