ABSTRACT
In India, about 35 million tons of coal bottom ash is produced annually. It is dumped on land adjoining sites of thermal power plants and is becoming environmental hazard to surrounding community. The productive use of coal bottom ash is the best way to alleviate the problems associated with its disposal.
The present research work has been carried out to evaluate the feasibility of utilization of Pond ash in cement concrete mix. Concrete is the most important engineering material and the addition of some other materials may change the properties of concrete. Due to rapid growth of construction industry the demand of concrete increases drastically. Many researchers working in the concrete area are trying to understand and modify various concrete properties along with optimizing the cost of concrete. Studies have been carried out to investigate the possibility of utilizing a broad range of materials as partial replacement materials for cement and aggregate in the production of concrete. The present experimental study was conceived following the general purpose of testing new sustainable building processes and modern production systems, aims not only at saving natural raw materials and reducing energy consumption, but also to recycle industrial by-products. The objectives of this study was to investigate the effect of use of coal ash as partial replacement of cement in various percentages (0–60%), on concrete properties such as compressive strength, density, workability. Test results show that workability and water loss through bleeding decreased. The test results of this research work indicates that at fixed water cement ratio, workability decreased with the use of pond ash as a replacement of cement in concrete, as it is more porous, therefore absorb more water than sand. Compressive strength of pond ash concrete at the curing age of 28 days was increased compared to control concrete. The density of concrete reduces with the increase percentage of pond ash. The part replacement of cement with pond ash for casting the slabs with different end conditions may be required for the required strength values. The part replacement of cement with; pond ash gives the required strength values for the concrete construction purpose and the cost of the pond ash becomes very cheap.
