Indian Railways (IR information mark) is a state-owned national transportation system, and is responsible for rail transport in India. It is owned and operated by the Government of India through the Ministry of Railways. It is the fourth largest rail network in the world comprising 119,630 kilometers (74,330 miles) of total track and 92,081 kilometers (57,216 miles) of running track on a route of 66,687 kilometers (41,437 miles) with 7,216 stations at the end of 2015-16 . . In 2015-16 IR transported 8,107 million passengers per year or more than 22 million passengers per day and 1,101 million tons of cargo per year. At the end of 2015-16, of the total route length of 68,525 km (42,579 mi), 28,327 km (17,602 mi) or 45% were electrified and 28,371 km (17,629 mi) or 37% were double or multi-lane routes . The rail network is predominantly a wide-width network. Small stretches of the network use meters and narrow gauges. All electrified lines use 25 kV AC electric traction.
