Abstract
Building cracks are most common type of problem occur in building. So it is important to understand the cause and measures to be taken for prevention and its repair. In this we are going to see about types of cracks in building , causes , life span , common failure modes of rcc and its preventions by modern methods and techniques
INTRODUCTION
Crack :-
Crack is a breaking of something in Concrete ,brick wall or any structure which looks like line in its surface but it is usually not separated into pieces.
Types of cracks in building
1. Structural crack
2. Non-structural cracks
Structural crack:
Structural cracks are those which result from incorrect design, faulty construction or over loading and these may endanger the safety of a building.
Non-structural crack:
Non-structural cracks are mostly due to the internally induced stresses in building materials and these generally do not directly result in structural weakness. In course of times, however. Sometimes non-structural cracks maybe because of penetration of moisture through cracks or weathering action result in corrosion of reinforcement and thus may render the structure unsafe.
PERFORMANCE OF CONCRETE STRUCTURE DEPENDS UPON:
Quality of concrete
Ambient conditions
Expected convention about design life span
Monumental structure like temple ,mosque or church is 500 to 1000 yrs.
Steel bridges ,steel buildings or similar structures is 100 to 150 yrs.
Concrete bridges or high rise buildings or stone bridges is 100 yrs.
A house or general building is 60 to 80 yrs.
Highways :concrete pavement for about 30 to 35 yrs and bituminous pavements for about 8 to 10 yrs.
